Description: Coyote Hills East Bay Regional Park sits around low-lying hills at the eastern shore of the south San Francisco Bay. It borders the Don Edwards National Wildlife Refuge and some trails, including ones recommended in the ride here, enter the refuge. The 18 miles of trails are paved bike paths, smooth fire roads, and a few easy single tracks. This is a very easy area, great for a first ride on a mountain bike or gravel bike, or great for just a little exercise in an area with abundant birdlife. The recommended ride takes in most of the trails, but excludes the Red Hill Trail, which contains short but extremely steep climbs. The Alameda Creek paved bike trail also terminates in Coyote Hills, and provides an opportunity to ride 10 miles to Niles and a connection to Vargas Plateau. Restrooms at the Don Edwards visitors center on Marshland Rd. and four places within the Coyote Hills park, mostly near the visitor’s center and parking lot.
In the Wet Season: Most trails are open, but some trails cross small stream crossings which may be seasonally closed.
Directions: Thornton Ave south exit from State Route 84, to Marshland Rd. Park at the small national Wildlife Refuge visitor’s center on the north side of Marshland Road. A link to the parking location in Google Maps is here.
