Description:
Del Valle offers 27 miles of trails in the open chaparral-covered hills surrounding Del Valle Reservoir. Trails are 75% dirt road and 25% single track. A single dirt/gravel road, named East Shore Trail, runs the length of the east side of the reservoir. A number of legal single tracks parallel the dirt road in the northern part of the park. In the southern part of the park, near the main park entrance, the park opens up to a variety of dirt road trails, nearly all with sustained climbs. Our recommended 1000 Footer starts at a roadside entrance near the highest elevation point in the park, drops to the reservoir first, then makes a loop to climb back to the starting point, nearly all on dirt roads. Our recommended Big Ride starts at the Arroyo Road entrance at the northern end of the park to take in the more interesting single track trails. Starting at the Arroyo Road entrance does require an initial 1 mile sustained climb which averages 15% grade with sections over 20%. A similarly steep single track climb awaits you at the end of the Big Ride. With very few trees, Del Valle can get very hot by mid day during the dry season. Bring plenty of water; water in the reservoir is often not potable. Arroyo Road and the Main Entrance parking lots require a fee to park, The roadside parking does not. Restrooms at parking lots and scattered around southern half of the reservoir.
In the Wet Season: Trails are open.
