Five Canyons Big Ride – Turn by Turn:

  1. Start at the main parking lot of Don Castro East Bay Regional ParkEast on through the parking lot and the overflow parking lot to the Ridgetop Trail.  0.3 miles, rolling
  2. Enter the Ridgetop Trail. 0.2 miles, dirt road, descent
  3. Right on Chabot to Garin Regional Trail/Bay Area Ridge Trail. Cross the bridge. 1 block, dirt road, flat
  4. Left to stay on Chabot to Garin Regional Trail/Bay Area Ridge Trail. The trail turns left onto a paved road for 100 feet, then right onto a single track 0.2 mile total, climb.
  5. Right to stay on Chabot to Garin Regional Trail/Bay Area Ridge Trail as it travels alongside Five Canyons Parkway, 0.1 Mile, gravel path alongside a sidewalk, climb
  6. Right on Shady Canyon Trail, which is initially a paved road that then runs through a small park, then crosses a paved road to enter a dirt single track.  The single track then crosses another paved road. The trail is signed all along the way as Shady Canyon Trail. 0.5 miles, paved road and single track, rolling
  7. Right on Deer Canyon. 1.1 Mile, dirt road, climb
  8. The trail ends at a paved road. Turn around to retrace your route.  1.1 mile, dirt road, descent
  9. Strait onto Shady Canyon Trail. 0.4 miles, single track, climb
  10. Left onto Newt Pond Trail. 0.5 miles, dirt road, climb
  11. Right onto Chabot to Garin Regional Trail/Bay Area Ridge Trail, 4.2 miles, dirt road, rolling but mostly climb.
  12. Go around the radio tower and enter the paved access road. 0.4 miles, paved road, flat
  13. At the Tournament Players Club Stonebrae golf course, left onto the golf cart path to follow the Chabot to Garin Regional Trail/Bay Area Ridge Trail. At this point you will be leaving the northern detached portion of Garin East Bay Regional Park.  The trail is signed and will utilize mostly golf cart paths for approximately 0.4 miles, until coming to the parking lot for the clubhouse.  Ride through the parking lot and past the Tennis Courts.   While improbable, this is the official trail and it is acceptable to ride on the paths.  0.6 miles, paved path and parking lot, rolling
  14. Straight on Chabot to Garin Regional Trail/Bay Area Ridge Trail utilizing the access road that continues beyond the tennis courts.  0.7 miles, paved and gravel path, rolling
  15. Straight to continue on Chabot to Garin Regional Trail/Bay Area Ridge Trail where the paved/gravel path ends at several hilltop water tanks and turns to a dirt road.  At this point you will be entering the main portion of Garin/Dry Creek Pioneer East Bay Regional Park.  The dirt road is named the Whipsnake Trail, although there will be no signage for that name until reaching the next intersection 1.8 miles later.  1.8 miles, dirt road, descent
  16. At the intersection with High Ridge Loop Trail, turn around to retrace your route all the way back to the intersection of Chabot to Garin Regional Trail/Bay Area Ridge Trail and Newt Pond Trail. 7.7 miles, dirt road and paved path, rolling.
  17. Right onto Chabot to Garin Regional Trail/Bay Area Ridge Trail, 0.7 miles, dirt Road, climb, then descent
  18. Right onto the paved access road to stay on Chabot to Garin Regional Trail/Bay Area Ridge Trail, 0.2 miles, paved road, descent
  19. Right to stay on Chabot to Garin Regional Trail/Bay Area Ridge Trail, 0.4 miles, dirt road, descent
  20. Cross Five Canyons Parkway, then right to follow the parkway on the gravel trail next to the sidewalk which is the continuation of Chabot to Garin Regional Trail/Bay Area Ridge Trail, 0.2 miles, gravel path alongside a sidewalk, descent
  21. Left to continue on Chabot to Garin Regional Trail/Bay Area Ridge Trail, the trail is initially a single track, then turns left on a paved road for 100 feet, then right onto a dirt road.  Total 0.2 miles, descent. 
  22. Right to stay on Chabot to Garin Regional Trail/Bay Area Ridge Trail, cross the bridge.  1 block, dirt road, flat
  23. Left on Ridgeline Trail. 0.2 miles, dirt road, climb
  24. Enter the overflow parking lot, then the main parking lot.  0.3 miles, rolling
