San Jose

Description: Calero contains 19 miles of trails open to bikes, mostly narrow path and single track, with some fire road. Trails include a small and a large loop through the south bay hills, a winding trail along a reservoir, and a climb to peaks in the adjacent Canada Del Oro Open Space Preserve. Calero is a perfect park for beginners, who will appreciate the lack of steep climbs and low technical difficulty while still experiencing narrow path trails.  Accomplished riders will also appreciate the winding single track trails through a combination of forested hills and open grasslands, the good views, the climb to Bald Peaks and the flow trail descent.  Note that this is a large park but mainly oriented to hikers and equestrians; many trails are closed to bikes.  We have three recommended rides, The 1000 Footer, a Medium Ride, and a Big Ride.  The Big Ride is actually shorter than the Medium Ride, but is substantially harder with much steeper and continuous climbs and stream crossings in winter and spring. Restrooms at all entrances except the Almaden Rd. entrance.

In the Wet Season:  Trails are closed to bikes after rains.

Directions:  Calero is in South San Jose, near the end of Almaden Expressway. The Rancho San Vincente parking lot on McKean Road has a large parking lot and a restroom and is the starting point for the 1000 Footer route.  A link to the parking location in Google Maps is here. The Main Entrance further south, but also on McKean Road, is the starting point for the Medium Ride and Big Ride. It also has a large parking lot and restrooms.  A link to the parking location for these two routes in Google Maps is here. Many trails in the Main Entrance area are closed to bikes.  There is also a third entrance on Almaden Road, which only has roadside parking for three cars.  A fourth entrance is at the parking lot for Canada Del Oro Open Space Preserve on Casa Loma Rd and contains restrooms.  This entrance allows access only to the Longwall Canyon trail, a shortcut into Canada Del Oro.
