Description: Mt. Umunhum is one of the most distinctive peaks in the Bay Area because of the massive concrete block on its relatively flat top that was once the foundation for an Air Force radar station. Now part of Sierra Azul Midpeninsula Regional Open Space, the peak is a challenging destination for both road and mountain bikers. There are mountain bike rides that top the mountain from parking lots on Mt Umunhum Rd. that are far less, or moderately less, challenging, depending upon which lot chosen. Those are described under the Sierra Azul Midpeninsula Regional Open Space entry. The ride described here is more of a challenge, with 4500 feet of climb, one extremely steep section, and nearly 25 miles of length out and back. Topping the mountain is very rewarding, but requires some preparation. The area can be very hot during the summer; carry extra water and food. The peak can be very cold in the winter, so carry extra clothing. Restroom at Hacienda entrance to Almaden Quicksilver, at the corner of Mt. Umhunum Rd and Hicks road, and at the Mt Umunhum summit.

In the wet season: Rangers aggressively close trails in Almaden Quicksilver after any precipitation. Trails in Sierra Azul are open.
Directions: Hacienda entrance to Almaden Quicksilver County Park, Almaden Rd., San Jose. A link to the parking location in Google Maps is here.
